Quarter 1 2009
From January to March 2009 we ran nearly 250 workshops (including 128 Secondary School Workshops and 87 Rookys Workshops)! That's BIG!
We worked with over 14,000 young people and 130 secondary and primary schools.
Compared to the same time last year, we have impacted a shed load more kids and run over 60 more workshops.
We've also managed to do this by saving Reach serious dosh. Big ups!
What the kids and teachers are saying...
The weekend has boosted my confidence and introduced me to amazing new people and made me happier than I've been in a long time.
Nathan, Heroes Weekend Away
I have always believed that Reach is amazing and after today it has only affirmed my belief that Reach has an integral place in empowering young people for the future.
Minto Felix, Student Well Being Representative, Melbourne High School
It made me look at myself differently. It moved me.
Year 9 Student, Secondary School Workshop
As a trained youth worker entering the teaching profession, your program has given me clarity on where I need to be in life!
Teacher, Finding Heroes Workshop

Rosie Hart! The face of Reach in Dolly Magazine’s Young Inspiring Leaders spread this month. Also one of our reporters on the new Reach TV, as well as just starting her own dance school with a friend, at age SEVENTEEN! She’s going great guns.
Imogen was appointed Program Champion for Secondary School Workshops at the beginning of the year. This was very exciting, as we haven’t had a Program Champion for Secondary School Workshops since 2006! In this short space of time, she has shown lots of dedication, enthusiasm and passion for the Program Champion role.
She is actively delivering Secondary School Workshops, and is constantly striving to improve her facilitation skills, as well as improve processes and procedures for other School Workshop Facilitators. Well done to a great start to the year Imo!
Zannie, Program Manager
Tommy Gardner has been super busy delivering Secondary School Workshops in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland these past few months. Feedback received from teachers, participants and parents have been extremely positive. Up and coming School Workshop facilitators have been going out and viewing Tom’s workshops and report about how amazing his facilitation and connection skills are. All the best with your adventures overseas Tommy – you will be missed by the Secondary School Workshop team!

Threshold Weekend Away
BTW -Tam Zimet has just started as the Youth Leadership Coordinator for the Linkz Odyssey Program. She'll be looking after the leadership team (the cats who go to the NT to work with indigenous kids on school holiday programs) and be working with the CEO of Linkz to build the program and do great things. She's hoping to also make it to the NT in January and work in a program herself.

Issues that matter to young people today
Cyber-bullying
The most common ages for bullying to occur is 10-14 years, during the transitional ages between primary and secondary
Most people claim to have felt depressed, angry and / or annoyed as a result of the bullying. Many also report feeling very alone. A concerning 37% reported feeling 'terrified'.
Cyber-bullying is happening among peer groups - two thirds of people claim to know their bully.
Social-network sites, chat rooms and emails are the most common vehicles for bullying, with mobile phones also very common.
Only about 1 in 3 victims reported to have told an adult about their experience. Ironically, of those who did speak out though, the majority found it helpful, particularly those who told a parent / carer. Talking to friends has also been helpful for most. The message this sends to us is that we need to encourage more young people to speak out!

Ramp News
The Ramp program team was reformed in 2009 with Paulo appointed as Program Champion, Tayah & Paulo as co-facs and Ash & Tim VH as trainees.
The program has been flying this year with 2 amazing workshops held at the Dream Factory. The most recent April workshop was based around trust and challenges and was a powerful experience for all involved.
Saskia and the facilitators have also been out and about visiting the residential units, engaging new participants and building on the connection of the Ramp community. Paulo and Saskia ran a training night for the Ramp crew and welcomed some new crew into the program for the year.
Congratulations to the Ramp team for taking on this challenging program head-first, supporting each other and really making a difference. Ramp is looking forward to continuing its path of growth, development and running kick-ass workshops throughout the year!

Belly and Snake
What you don't know is Belly's adventure traveling in Tassie. Poor Belly....
Not only did his workshops get re-scheduled, which meant he had to drive for 4 hours from Hobart to Beaconsfield, but when he got there (at 11pm that night) his accommodation had been double booked!
No worries, Snake (think BIG, BURLY, HAIRY, TATTOOED TASSIE WILDERNESS MAN) offered him his couch to sleep on. Who's Snake you ask? Well, we hadn't heard of him, and neither had Belly. He declined the kind offer and decided to drive back to Launceston and sleep in a hotel with Elise. Pity his phone died on the drive back. He couldn't call Elise and tell her that he needed to crash in her room. So, when he got to the hotel he basically wondered around screaming her name (he might have been a little tired and emotional) until she woke up and let him in.
Poor Belly. The things you do for the kids. Bless.
